Like Ron Thompson’s free weekly concert? Well, it needs help to survive

As free weekly music events go in this town, they don’t get much more consistent or much better than the Central Valley Blues Society’s weekly free show with blues vet Ron Thompson.

Thompson’s been playing a free Thursday night show in Fresno — including tonight at 6 — for nearly 10 years now, beginning at Porky’s, moving to Crossroads and now living at Babylon.

Well, the blues society warns it all might be coming to an end unless turnout gets better.
Writes CVBS head honcho Don Heflin in his weekly newsletter:

I need to get to the heart of this message by saying I know a lot of you receiving this newsletter may live outside the area where its not possible to come out. A lot of you do live close enough but keep saying, “I need to make it out sometime, I hear its really great”. Then there are those who have been coming out forever who can’t do without it. It’s called a lot of things, “Date Night, Dance Night, Stress Relief Night, Groove Night, but most of all IT’S BLUES NIGHT!

Tonight: Devin the Dude at Fulton 55

Laid-back hip-hop pothead Devin the Dude stops in Fresno tonight for a gig at Fulton 55. Devin came out of the Houston rap scene and is perhaps best known for adding vocals to a certain explicitly titled Dr. Dre song.

But I’m sure there many Devin fans out there who love “Doobie Ashtray” as much as I do. Or “What a Job” with Andre 3K.

Anyhow, you can catch Devin for $20-$22. Notably on the bill is 99 North, a new collaboration between local rappers Diego Redd and Shake Da Mayor.

Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

While you get started on my 2011 Fresno checklist

1. CELEBRATE WITH AUDIE
Audie from Audie’s Olympic is having his birthday this weekend — and he’s celebrating with a big two-night live music party. A few things to note: There is an actual band named Meth Leppard (!!) and Strange Vine (one of the best bands in town) is playing Saturday night with burlesque dancers also part of the show. I don’t think you can wrong either night, folks.

Last week, I wrote about a number of local music events aimed at helping Haiti. The list has kept growing, so I figured an update was in order.

Remember that Rock 4 Haiti is still coming up on Tuesday at Starline, and the Sound-N-Vision benefit in Visalia is also this weekend. Here are a few that are new to schedule.
