p0904_opera_remix_for_web_jpgUPDATE: Congrats to winners Tamra Coates and Nathaniel McIntosh. See you there tonight!

ORIGINAL POST: You say you’re open to opera but not so sure you’ll enjoy it? Fresno Grand Opera wants to get its hands on you. I write about the company’s grand experiment with “Opera Remix,” which plays Thursday, Sept. 10, an evening that brings together classic rock arias (we’re talking Chicago, Queen and Journey) with beloved opera arias. (Even if you don’t recognize the title “Nessun Dorma,” you’re sure to have heard it, and will likely gush at how beautiful it is.) I tell you a lot more about the concert in the cover story of Friday’s 7 section, along with an in-depth look at how the company is trying to expand audiences with new and exciting artistic collaborations and experiences.

Which brings me to our contest: I’m giving away two pairs of tickets to “Opera Remix” at the Tower Theatre to Beehive readers.

To enter, leave a comment on this post answering the following question: If you were stranded on a desert island and had the choice of exactly one song (and one song only) on your conveniently still working iPod with solar recharger — with the choice being either Styx’s “Come Sail Away” or “Quando me’n vo” from Puccini’s “La Boheme,” both of which are on the “Opera Remix” program — which one would you pick?

One entry per person, please. Entries must be received by 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. When you enter, please include a valid email address so we can contact you if you’re a winner. I’ll be informing our winners by email on Tuesday, so keep a watch on your inbox.

    “Quando me’n vo”

I’ve never been to an opera before and would love to see one with my partner as an anniversary gift. Here is hoping!

I would pick Puccini’s Quando me’n vo. My Mom loves Puccini and would be over the moon if I took her to this.

“come sail away” by Styx. It brings images of sailing away to far away, exotic, unexplored destinations. I’m not familiar with the other song.

I would play “Quando me’n vo”. I really the play (La boheme) that this song was part of and I really, really like the play and movie “Rent” which was based off of La boheme. Great music!

This is really a good idea. Not many are true fans of Opera. However, this Opera Remix is sure to create some fun and interest in music lovers. And yes, that after concert Karaoke idea is great. I really look forward to attending such an event.
