The interwebs exploded today with rumors after someone spotted a Craigslist posting that appeared to be Hooters hiring for a Tower District location. It reads: “Hooters is opening a new location this fall in the Tower District!!! Now taking applications!!!!” And then went on to give legit-sounding details about positions available. The resulting conversation about it on the Good Morning Tower Facebook group is entertaining reading.

Only one problem. No one seems to know anything about it — including Hooters.

In response to my email and phone call about a Tower location,  Hooters PR firm emailed this response from Mark Whittle, senior vice president of global development:

“While Hooters is always looking to spread its wings across the nation and around the world, the iconic wing destination does not currently have plans to open a new location in Fresno.”

Sometimes, big companies will try to keep these things under wraps until they can announce it in a big shebang, but usually there’s other sources that would be able to confirm it. So far, I haven’t found anyone.

The list of people who haven’t seen any legitimate evidence (including all kinds of permits needed to open a business in the Tower District) include the head of the Tower District Marketing Committee (who says plans for the new billiard club and bar in the former Blockbuster are progressing), the owner of the former Fulton’s Folly building, City Council Member Esmeralda Soria’s chief of staff (who says “we’re not taking it seriously right now”), city spokesman Mark Standriff (who said the head planning dude hadn’t heard of it, but is checking their files) and Kiel Schmidt, who sits on the Tower District Design Review Committee and said nothing has come before his committee yet (and even a sign change would).

So there you have it. Is it a practical joke? Ploy to get young women to send their photos? Massive conspiracy to keep it under wraps? You decide.
