addicted to fresnoI’ve been talking up Jaime Babbit’s Fresno-centered dark comedy since last October, at least.

The film stars Natasha Lyonne and Judy Greer as co-dependent siblings (one’s a lesbian, the other a sex addict) who work cleaning hotel rooms IN FRESNO, because Fresno is a horrible place to exist (one supposes). To add a wrinkle, the pair accidentally kill one of the hotel’s guests and also rob a sex shop.

That’s what I gathered from the trailer anyway, which was released today via Gravitas Ventures.

Oddly, the film gets a new name along with the trailer. It was simply called “Fresno” when it debuted at SXSW in March.

“Addicted to Fresno” probably makes more sense plot wise (or is better for marketing. Or something).

The trailer is extremely NSFW (so beware) and leaves little hope that the film uses Fresno for anything more than a (repeated) punchline. Still, we’re all gonna see it, right?

Josh, Answering an anticipated question in advance – Despite the (First Amendment protected) subject matter and anticipated rating, the Fresno Film Commission tried very earnestly to have the production company shoot the main film here in Fresno. Dollars are Dollars and “on location” filming is about Economic Development. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately depending on where you go to church and how you vote, we were unsuccessful except for two days of B Roll, or background street/sidewalk shots. A funny side note, after the fact I asked the Producer with whom I was working how Judy Greer (one of my favorites) was to work with. His response was, “Natasha Lyonne is %#$@ing insane, no really, she’s crazy.” So I’m assuming Judy was a sweetheart. All the best, Ray
