The New Ensemble and StageWorks Fresno come together in another installment of the popular Hot Off the Stages Play Reading series. The selection is Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina,” which played last year on Broadway. A description:
Back in 1962, most men went to the Catskill Mountains to escape the summer heat, but others took the drive to escape something else entirely: being men. Tucked away in the quiet countryside sat an inconspicuous bungalow colony that catered to a very special clientele: heterosexual men whose favorite pastime was dressing and acting as women.
The performance is 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the Fresno Art Museum.
The cast is scheduled to include Chris Mangels, Haley White, Dillon Morgan, Matthew Schiltz, Joel Abels, J. Daniel Herring, C. Tim Quinn and Jennifer Lewis.
Fun side note: The famed illustrator Ken Fallin gave permission for his drawing for the original Broadway production, pictured above, to be used to promote the reading. All that New Ensemble artistic director Heather Parish had to do was ask.
