It’s been in the works for years, with only a unicorn with rainbows shooting from its backside painted on the windows to give a hint of what’s to come. But work has finally started on FAB, a bar and nightclub that is LGBT friendly and scheduled to open this summer. FAB is short for fabulous, of course.
Now the unicorn is gone and white barricades hide the construction happening in the building on Olive Avenue between Tower Tattoos and the La Tienda Guild thrift shop. FAB has all its permits — liquor license and various permits from the city and the police department — and work is starting on the inside of the building.
When it’s done, it will be a bar that transitions into a nightclub in the evening, with a modern industrial look, says owner Cisco Mendez, who is opening FAB with his husband Terry Story. The pair bought the building three years ago. FAB will have lots of black and pink, and sliding glass doors that open to a patio area overlooking the sidewalk, similar to Bobby Salazar’s across the street.
“We’re trying to create a safe space for everyone,” Mendez says. “It lets people know — trans [gender] people, lesbian, gay people — that they can go into there and be themselves.” It will be a safe place to hug or kiss a same-sex lover, he says. The straight community is welcome too.
FAB will have a stage and feature live music, comedians, magicians — all kinds of entertainment, says Mendez, who also has a side gig as a clown with Circus Et Cetera, a Fresno-based troop of belly dancers, fire dancers and stilt walkers.
